El Retiro

Alpha version

El Retiro

A countryside island, all the time in the world, and whatever you can raise with your own hands.

A survival and exploration game on an island of about 256 km² grown from a seed: pine woods, marshes, rivers, hills and beaches, different in every game. Alone or with up to three friends.

Discover the island The alpha version

The game

You arrive on an island of open country with nothing but the clothes on your back. Every island is generated from a seed: the land, the rivers and their deltas, the hills, the coast with its beaches and waves, the trees and the scrub. Two different seeds, two different islands.

Days go by on their own clock: the sun rises and sets, some mornings there is fog over the rivers, trees and shrubs grow, and the animals go on with their lives even when you are far away. What you do with your time is up to you: gather, craft, build, tame, trade, or just roam the island on horseback.

On the island

  • An island of 256 km²

Generated from a seed, with kinds of terrain, rivers and deltas, hills, marshes, the sea, its beaches and its waves.

  • Living off the land

Mine, fell, dig and harvest. Inventory, recipes, campfires to light, wicker baskets, and glazed jars and great earthen jars fired in a clay kiln.

  • Building with the hammer

Earth or stone foundations, brushwood walls, a door that opens and roofs: pieces that snap together as blue ghosts and rise with blows of the hammer.

  • Home and furniture

Rocking chairs that rock, painted rush chairs, stools, tables, benches, brass beds and straw mattresses to lie on, chests and panniers to keep things in.

  • Horses, donkeys and mules

Tame wild horses and ride them; saddle, pack and load donkeys and mules, lead them by the halter and tie them wherever you like.

  • Carts, part by part

Build a two-wheeled cart or a covered wagon, hitch one beast or a pair to the pole and drive from the seat. The wheels leave their ruts in the sand and the mud.

  • Wildlife living its life

Rabbits, foxes, imperial eagles, lynxes, wild boars, red deer, fallow deer and roe deer live, hunt, are born and die all over the island, whether you are near or not.

  • People and clothes

Realistic characters and an editor to make your own, traditional clothes made from sewing patterns, and a traders' camp to buy and sell.

  • Map, instinct and photos

A map under a fog that clears as you explore, fast travel and your own markers; the warrior's instinct to sense the animals around you; and a photo mode.

  • Together, up to four

Share your game on the local network, over the Internet or with your Epic friends, with no official servers to depend on. Whoever leaves falls asleep where they were, and the host decides who comes in.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play alone?

Yes. Shared games are optional: you can play the whole island on your own.

Do I need an Epic Games account?

No. You only need one to play with your Epic friends or join their games. On the local network or by IP address you play without an account.

Are there official servers?

No. El Retiro has no official servers: shared games are hosted by the players themselves, on their own computer or on a server they set up.

Where are my games saved?

On your computer. The game saves the island's seed and the changes you made, with several named saves and an autosave.

What data does the game collect?

The minimum needed for online play, and none if you play alone without signing in to Epic. No ads, no analytics, no tracking. It is all explained in the privacy policy.

Is the island a real place?

No. El Retiro is a work of fiction: the island, its places and its characters are made up, though inspired by the landscape and traditions of the southern countryside.
